SUMMARY:BIODANZA
DESCRIPTION:Biodanza: The Dance of Life + The Poetry of Human Encounter \nJoin us for an evening of movement\, music\, community\, and heartfelt\, intentional connection! Our “vivencia” (from the Spanish word “vivir\,” meaning “to live”) will include a series of artfully guided dances and encounters designed to evoke core emotion and authentic expression. Together we will move\, play\, explore\, and celebrate our collective aliveness. \nSuitable for all bodies and experience levels\, our practice is rooted in generative support and inclusion. Come explore your majestic inner rhythm and connect with that of others. The Dance of Life promises a true feast for soma and soul! \nWhat is Biodanza? \nThe word “Biodanza” literally translates\, from Spanish\, to mean “The Dance of Life.” Founded in the 1960s by Chilean anthropologist and psychologist Rolando Toro\, it is an elegant system of somatic and relational self-development that combines dance\, music\, archetypal gesture\, and intentional connection to stimulate five lines of human potential: vitality\, sexuality\, creativity\, affectivity\, and transcendence. It fosters reconnection with our vital instincts\, our emotions\, our bodies\, and our in-the-flesh relationship with each other as dynamic\, feeling human beings. Sometimes referred to as “The Poetry of Human Encounter\,” it is truly a Masterclass in embodied Love! \nAbout Your Facilitator: \nAshley King brings nearly two decades of experience as a somatic psychotherapist and facilitator\, drawing from traditions that honor the intelligence of the body\, the power of emotional truth\, and the poetics of embodied relationship. Her work weaves together mindfulness\, relational depth\, and an artful sensitivity to what is unapologetically alive. She is the founder of psychoalchemy.com and Biodanza Philly\, where she has been passionately growing a community of enthusiasts for the Dance of Life since finishing her facilitator training in 2025. \n$33 Early Bird Pricing Until February 14!\n$40 Regular \n

SUMMARY:The Oldest Profession: The Solo Comedy Show at Newark Culture Club April 26th
DESCRIPTION:Written & Performed by Kaytlin Bailey \nKaytlin Bailey offers a new angle on the world’s oldest profession\, reframing the story of western civilization. Weaving history\, stand-up comedy\, and lived experience in a fast-paced and profoundly moving hour-long solo show. The performance is punctuated by a projected art history slideshow. \nThe show opens with a comedic monologue introducing Kaytlin Bailey\, her background as an Army brat\, history major\, and sex worker. \nShe quickly transitions into the promise of the show\, which is to cover 10\,000 years of history from her perspective as a sex worker. Alternating between her own family history\, lived experience\, and contemporary observations\, we meet many canonized characters from history\, and trace the evolution of the sacred whore from deified\, to demonized\, to diseased. We spend time in the ancient world revisiting the Epic of Gilgamesh\, the story of Genesis\, and meet historic figures including Phryne\, Veronica Franco\, and Victoria Woodhull. \nWe learn the origins of the emergent sex worker rights movement\, complicating figures like Gloria Steinem while lifting up Margo St. James and Carol Leigh. Special interest is paid to the comparison between Kaytlin’s own experiences as a sex worker and her father’s experiences as a soldier. The vast history covered in The Oldest Profession is deeply informed by the relationship and divergent narratives between warriors and whores\, which can be traced back to some of our oldest myths. This show is for adults who want to laugh while they learn about a historically stigmatized community in a funny\, approachable\, and safe way. \nThe show appeals to academics\, comedy fans\, history nerds\, and sex workers alike\, but also appeals to conservative dads\, informed moms\, libertarians\, progressives\, feminists\, and folks in the LGBTQ+ community.

SUMMARY:History Talk: The Master of Drums: Gene Krupa and The Music He Gave The World
DESCRIPTION:Historical Society of Moorestown Trustee Elizabeth J. Rosenthal will speak about her recently published book\, The Master of Drums: Gene Krupa and The Music He Gave The World. It is the definitive biography of Gene Krupa\, one of the most famous drummers of all time\, whose feverish rhythms defined the Swing Era\, changed jazz music forever\, spurred rock and roll\, and influenced generations. From jazz to the Swing Era\, to rock and roll. Elizabeth J. Rosenthal recounts the pioneering drummer’s exploits\, challenges\, and accomplishments\, while framing him against not just his fellow musicians and peers but the music industry and general culture as a whole. The Master of Drums has been nominated for the Jazz Journalists Association’s book award. \nAs a special treat\, Liz will be joined by Moorestown’s Steve Pappaterra\, who will demonstrate some of the techniques and styles pioneered by Krupa. Steve began playing drums professionally at age 17 as a member of The Lamplighters\, an 18-piece big band modeled after the Glenn Miller Orchestra\, performing more than 450 times over four years. Steve went on to perform with numerous big bands\, including the City Rhythm Orchestra and the Upfront Big Band\, as well as on cruise engagements with the Al Raymond Orchestra. \nThis program is part of the Historical Society of Moorestown’s “New Jersey History Speaks Lecture Series” and is co-sponsored by the Historical Society and the Moorestown Library. \nTo attend the program\, please register (for free)
