SUMMARY:The Oldest Profession: The Solo Comedy Show at Newark Culture Club April 26th
DESCRIPTION:Written & Performed by Kaytlin Bailey \nKaytlin Bailey offers a new angle on the world’s oldest profession\, reframing the story of western civilization. Weaving history\, stand-up comedy\, and lived experience in a fast-paced and profoundly moving hour-long solo show. The performance is punctuated by a projected art history slideshow. \nThe show opens with a comedic monologue introducing Kaytlin Bailey\, her background as an Army brat\, history major\, and sex worker. \nShe quickly transitions into the promise of the show\, which is to cover 10\,000 years of history from her perspective as a sex worker. Alternating between her own family history\, lived experience\, and contemporary observations\, we meet many canonized characters from history\, and trace the evolution of the sacred whore from deified\, to demonized\, to diseased. We spend time in the ancient world revisiting the Epic of Gilgamesh\, the story of Genesis\, and meet historic figures including Phryne\, Veronica Franco\, and Victoria Woodhull. \nWe learn the origins of the emergent sex worker rights movement\, complicating figures like Gloria Steinem while lifting up Margo St. James and Carol Leigh. Special interest is paid to the comparison between Kaytlin’s own experiences as a sex worker and her father’s experiences as a soldier. The vast history covered in The Oldest Profession is deeply informed by the relationship and divergent narratives between warriors and whores\, which can be traced back to some of our oldest myths. This show is for adults who want to laugh while they learn about a historically stigmatized community in a funny\, approachable\, and safe way. \nThe show appeals to academics\, comedy fans\, history nerds\, and sex workers alike\, but also appeals to conservative dads\, informed moms\, libertarians\, progressives\, feminists\, and folks in the LGBTQ+ community.

SUMMARY:History Talk: The Master of Drums: Gene Krupa and The Music He Gave The World
DESCRIPTION:Historical Society of Moorestown Trustee Elizabeth J. Rosenthal will speak about her recently published book\, The Master of Drums: Gene Krupa and The Music He Gave The World. It is the definitive biography of Gene Krupa\, one of the most famous drummers of all time\, whose feverish rhythms defined the Swing Era\, changed jazz music forever\, spurred rock and roll\, and influenced generations. From jazz to the Swing Era\, to rock and roll. Elizabeth J. Rosenthal recounts the pioneering drummer’s exploits\, challenges\, and accomplishments\, while framing him against not just his fellow musicians and peers but the music industry and general culture as a whole. The Master of Drums has been nominated for the Jazz Journalists Association’s book award. \nAs a special treat\, Liz will be joined by Moorestown’s Steve Pappaterra\, who will demonstrate some of the techniques and styles pioneered by Krupa. Steve began playing drums professionally at age 17 as a member of The Lamplighters\, an 18-piece big band modeled after the Glenn Miller Orchestra\, performing more than 450 times over four years. Steve went on to perform with numerous big bands\, including the City Rhythm Orchestra and the Upfront Big Band\, as well as on cruise engagements with the Al Raymond Orchestra. \nThis program is part of the Historical Society of Moorestown’s “New Jersey History Speaks Lecture Series” and is co-sponsored by the Historical Society and the Moorestown Library. \nTo attend the program\, please register (for free)

SUMMARY:Colonial Artisans & Arms: Makers of the Nation
DESCRIPTION:The Bordentown Historical Society kicks off our Revolutionary War 250 events in New Jersey celebration with an outdoor event that brings the world of the 1770s–1800s to life. Step into the past as tradespersons showcase the skills and crafts that sustained daily life during the War for Independence. \nWatch a blacksmith hammer iron\, see a spinner and weaver at work. Explore the artistry of a cooper\, candle maker\, gardener\, herbalist\, fisherman\, leather worker\, and glass blower. Each artisan will demonstrate their craft in action and share the knowledge behind it. Many will offer their handmade wares for sale\, alongside books and maps highlighting local colonial history. \nA regiment from the Colonial Line will set up an authentic encampment. Visitors will get to see how soldiers camped\, cooked\, and prepared their armaments. Children can enjoy hands-on fun at a special craft tent designed to spark creativity and connect them with colonial life. Musicians specializing in period music will fill the air with songs of the 18th century. \nWe also welcome a Lenni Lenape historian and storyteller\, presented with the Discovery Center at Point Breeze\, who will share the history\, traditions\, and culture of the Lenape tribes in Bordentown and the surrounding area. Their stories will reveal the community’s deep connections to the land and its earliest people. \nThis exciting and educational event offers something for all ages. Join us and experience the crafts\, music\, history\, and stories that shaped the fight for independence!

SUMMARY:MAC-VAC Veterans’ Art Exhibit Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary Through Art\, Reflection\, and Service
DESCRIPTION:The Medford area communities are invited to experience a moving tribute to America’s 250th anniversary through the eyes and creativity of local veteran artists in the exhibit\, “A Celebration & Reflection on America’s Semiquincentennial.” The exhibit will be on display from May 15th through December 31st\, 2026\, at the Medford Township Building\, 49 Union Street\, Medford\, NJ. \n  \nThe exhibit features original works created by members of MAC-VAC (Military Artist Community | Veteran Art Class)\, a unique and inspiring group of veteran artists who come together to create\, connect\, and heal through artistic expression. \nFounded in 2018\, MAC-VAC was created by artist Art Smith as a supportive artistic community for veterans.  As the program grew\, local art instructor Toni Frary joined as co-teacher\, helping to foster an environment where veterans could explore creativity\, share personal experiences\, and build lasting camaraderie through art. \nToday\, Toni Frary continues to teach the free Veterans Art Class at the Protestant Community Church in Medford Lakes\, NJ.  Through painting\, drawing\, mixed media\, and other artistic mediums\, MAC-VAC artists continue to inspire audiences while demonstrating the healing power of creativity and community. \nThe exhibit explores themes of patriotism\, sacrifice\, freedom\, resilience\, and the evolving story of America through the lens of those who have served our country. Visitors will experience deeply personal artistic interpretations reflecting both celebration and thoughtful reflection as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. \nThis exhibit was coordinated by ELM Gallery and Art Goes To Town\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization\, in honor and support of MAC-VAC and the veteran artists who continue to enrich the community through their work.
