The Essence of Harmony Choral Society a relatively new community music organization welcomes in the 2021 year-end holiday season with a presentation of Handel’s Messiah. The oratorio was composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel and will be presented with a 12-piece orchestra at the Burlington County Library Auditorium in Westhampton, NJ. In addition, they will be joined by 4 professional soloists from the Tri-State area: Soprano Silky Carter, Counter-Tenor Andrew Darling, Tenor George Johnson, and Bass Cyrus Fitzgerald. The choir is conducted by Cherisse R. Bonefont.

THE MESSIAH is a musical rite of the holiday season. G. F. Händel composed the Messiah in just three and four weeks in August and September 1741. “He would literally write from morning to night,” noted the Handel Museum House in London. The piece was originally designed for the Easter season, but soon became a Christmas favorite for singers and audiences.

The Essence of Harmony Choral Society was formed in late 2019, just before the outbreak of the pandemic. During 2020 the choir performed virtually – first a concert in celebration of Black History Month, entitled The Road to Freedom: A Celebration in Song and Word, and the choir also presented anthems by African American composers for Juneteenth. The choir while ethnically diverse is predominately African American with a mission to bring joy and culture to the greater Burlington County community by celebrating the voices of singers of diverse cultures and backgrounds through beautiful choral music through high-quality performances.

The Choral Conductor is Cherisse Bonefonte of Lumberton. She is joined by Britt Montoro of Morrisville, PA, who serves as the Choir accompanist. The group is in residence at Bethel AME Church in Moorestown.

THE MESSIAH will be presented at the Burlington County Library Auditorium in Westhampton, NJ. The single performance is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 at 2:00 pm. Admission is free and open to the public, but seats are limited. Covid protocols are in place and all those attending the concert must wear a mask while in the building.
