Happy Haddyween! The FIRST Annual Haddyween is developing in Haddonfield to provide a fun and safe way to enjoy the holiday – with a local twist…our beloved hadrosaurus bronze sculpture, “Haddy”!
History: The hadrosaurus foulkii was discovered in Haddonfield in 1838, and became first the first ever mounted dinosaur skeleton. Since 1991, the species H. foulkii has become the official state dinosaur of New Jersey.
Scarecrow Home-Walk: Kicking off on Saturday October 10th, the last day of the Haddonfield Farmers Market, the ingredients to make scarecrows will be available for pick up for town residents to enjoy making and displaying at their homes. Local organizations are collaborating to encourage the first town-wide scarecrows at home-walk. Markeim Arts Center will have Markeim artists creating scarecrow displays around the neighborhood with the help of local artists and board members. All scarecrows will be finalized and displayed on front yards by October 16th.
Window Display Contest: Between October 16th and November 1st, downtown shoppers can vote for their favorite Haddyween window displays. One lucky shopper will win a Trick-or-Treat bag of gift cards contributed by participating businesses. The business that gets the most votes will win free advertising in Haddonfield Today, sponsor of the contest.
Scavenger Hunts: The Historical Society of Haddonfield and the Allison Nagle Team – RE/MAX One – each have unique and family-friendly scavenger hunts with information and materials available for pick up at the Haddonfield Farmers Market, which opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday October 10th at the Haddyween table.
Toys and Books: Happy Hippo will have a wide variety of dinosaur-themed toys for kids to enjoy. And there may even be an appearance by a friendly dinosaur on the corner of Kings Highway and Haddon Avenue. Also, visit Inkwood Books for dinosaur and Halloween-themed reading fun.
Photo Opportunities: DiBartolo’s brand new European-style patisserie is baking up something special! Stay tuned! In addition, photo opportunities for families by the bronze sculpture will be available, including a guest appearance from the artist himself, John Giannotti. Mr. Giannotti will be sharing in-person history on October 31st starting at 11 a.m. by the sculpture he crafted. Haddonfield businesses will also have creative and fun window displays for locals to enjoy.
Libations: King’s Road Brewery is featuring a Haddy-themed beer for the occasion called Hadrosaur Hop Giant, which will be released on Saturday, October 31st on Haddyween. Then, when the sun goes down on Saturday, October 31st, King’s Road will be showing Jurassic Park on the outside wall of their beer garden (weather permitting).
