Trinity “Old Swedes” Church in Swedesboro, NJ presents its annual celebration of St. Lucia and the Festival of Lights on Sunday, December 15th at 6:00 pm. This is an old Scandinavian tradition that features Tomte, the Swedish Santa, the Star Boys who tell of the Wise Men, and Sankta Lucia herself, who wears a crown of candle lights as she carries her tray of saffron buns. She symbolically heralds the return of light to the earth on the darkest day of the year and the beginning of the Christmas season. The Sunday School children play the roles with help from the adults. The Fest will be followed by Christmastide Lessons and Carol sing.

Trinity “Old Swedes” Church was founded by Swedish Lutheran settlers who originally worshiped in a log cabin on the site in 1703. In 1789, the congregation affiliated with the Episcopal Church and is a member of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey. The current church building dates to 1784 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
