Due to COVID safety guidelines, local South Jersey art studios, centers, and galleries have gone virtual! There are classes and camps for all ages and experience levels. Many of the local arts programs are in a tough financial position this summer, having to cancel normal summer events. Below you will find a variety of programs as well as ways to support and donate to help keep them alive long after COVID-19. Keep creating and sharing, South Jersey!
Markheim Arts Center
Lessons in Creative Exercises & Challenges: It can be difficult to stay motivated and to come up with new creative ideas, especially during this time. This class is aimed to help break anyone out of an art block, make yourself think in new ways, and to help you get into the creative head space. The goal is to not make a perfect piece of art but to force yourself to just make something given unique limitations. Every lesson you will be presented a new drawing challenge and together everyone will create their own piece. Your teacher will talk you through and show her thinking process as she tackles the same challenges that you are also doing. You will learn several tips and tricks, as well as plenty of resources to motivate, inspire, and keep you challenged in a fun and informative format.
When: 5 Tuesdays 3:30-4:30 PM (7/28, 8/4, 8/11, 8/18, and 8/25)
Virtual Arts & Crafts Under the Sea: During this virtual class we will be creating artwork inspired by the ocean and the animals that live in the ocean. Each day, we will be creating 2D and 3D crafts with items that you have around the house. This class is for kids ages 6-12 and will be held via zoom.
Monday – Friday, July 27-31
10:00am – 11:00am OR 2:00pm – 3:00pm

Appel Farm Arts & Music Campus
Teaching Artist Summer Series: Natural Links How to Curriculum Mine for SEL
In this interactive workshop, we will explore natural links within your existing curriculum that lend themselves to SEL and guide you through the process of “curriculum mining.” After reviewing the five competencies of SEL, we will model how to mine existing lessons for SEL-based standards. Participants will then search their own curriculum for intentional SEL opportunities, link them to SEL standards, and expand upon these connections with appropriate arts activities and assessment.
The Sunflower Series: Love Grows at Appel Farm
The entire Appel Farm community will gather online to watch beautiful performances by their brilliant and talented alumni from across the country and around the world, spanning 60 years, and all of the arts, to ensure that Appel Farm will be here for at least another 60 years.
