SUMMARY:The British Invade Haddonfield
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 6\, 2026\, the Redcoats will invade Haddonfield and be challenged by Continental troops\, just as they did 250 years ago — in June 1778. \nThe day’s events include activities such as a yelling contest\, colonial dancing\, pillory prisoners and character reenactors. Plus\, soldier reenactors will be available to meet visitors before and after the Skirmish. \nRedcoats will charge\, muskets will be fired\, and the Continentals will try to stop the British before they head off to the Battle at Monmouth. General Washington had ordered the militia to “annoy” the Redcoats\, and so we will again.\nThe clash and other events takes place on Kings Highway. There will be plenty of sidewalk space for viewing and cheering along Kings Highway and the conflict should take about 20 minutes. Tours of the historic tavern will be offered all day. \nHow Many Benjamins Does it Take to Host the Skirmish? \nWe’ll even settle for a few Hamiltons … \nThis event is brought to you by the Friends of the Indian King Tavern Museum\, a nonprofit\, and through generous donations from people like you! \nPlease donate or become a sponsor now!

SUMMARY:A Wistar Party
DESCRIPTION:The Natural Philosopher and his “Cabinet of Curiosities”\nModern museums had their beginnings in the 17th and 18th century with the advent of Cabinets of curious and wondrous specimens.\nScience-History Educator\, Dean Howarth\, assumes the role of Casper Wistar\, Philadelphia man of science. Wistar was a member of the American Philosophical Society\, friend of Jefferson\, expert anatomist\, tutor to Merriwether Lewis\, assembler of mammoth bones\, and namesake of the Wisteria! At his home on Locust Street\, this polymath held Sunday night “Wistar Parties” where he gathered intellectuals\, scientists\, students\, and travelers for intimate\, comfortable conversations.\nThe Natural Philosopher will recreate a Wister Party incorporating his large collection of fossils\, skeletons\, and varied specimens of flora and fauna from the Americas and the globe. Narratives include pre-evolutionary theory\, exploration\, and the commerce behind botany and biology\, the story of the young Mary Anning\, the United Kingdom’s’ 1st female paleontologist\, and the odd fossils found near Haddonfield!\nwww.livinghistoriesofscience.com \nSaturday April 18th \n2-3pm  Specimen viewing \n3pm presentation

SUMMARY:Finding Flora’s Footsteps: Slavery and Emancipation at Haddonfield’s Indian King Tavern
DESCRIPTION:Join us to discover fascinating new research regarding experiences of slavery and freedom at the Indian King Tavern and the larger community.\nA young woman named Flora – an enslaved worker at the tavern – was manumitted by tavern-keeper Hugh Creighton in1791\, shortly after his retirement. But what became of Flora after she was freed? And what can we learn about the fates of other formerly enslaved South Jersey residents after manumission?\nThe Indian King Tavern Historic Site is proud to present a three-part panel presentation which will explore new and ongoing research on these questions:\nJoella Clamen\, a historic interpreter at the tavern site\, will introduce the history of the building and what is known of its enslaved residents\, including Flora.\nAuthor Jo Ann Laughlin\, current resident of a house once occupied by tavern-keeper Hugh Creighton’s daughter\, will present original research detailed in her 2024 book Stratton Hall: A House with a Name. This book offers an intriguing look into the possible destinies of Flora and her children as founding members of a historic free Black community in Woolwich\, NJ.\nFounder Avis Wanda McClinton and researcher Shamele Jordan of the 339 Manumissions and Beyond Project\, will shed light on the ongoing genealogical research being done to uncover the wider history of enslavement and manumission in the Philadelphia and South Jersey regions.\nPresentation at 2pm\, on Saturday\, March 21\, 2026\, followed by book signing
