SUMMARY:Opening Reception and Artist Talk/Devan Shimoyama: SHIFT
DESCRIPTION:January 26 – March 21\, 2026\nArtist’s talk and opening reception February 4th\, 5:00 – 7:00 PM – artist’s talk begins at 5:30 Let us know you are coming. \nDevan Shimoyama draws equally from classical mythology and the cultural landscape of his youth to create works that center the queer Black male form. Through self-portraiture and tableaux\, he reflects on the politics of queer experience while navigating his own personal narrative. \nWorking across a wide range of materials and techniques\, Shimoyama explores the tension between celebration and silence within queer culture and sexuality. Referencing the dramatic sensibilities of painters such as Caravaggio and Goya\, he layers his surfaces with jewels\, black glitter\, rhinestones\, and sequins to evoke both the beauty and alienation of the Black queer body. \nHis most recent body of work is inspired by the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. Shimoyama stages scenes of transformation alluding to the dialogue between genuine and superficial change. The series reflects on our desire to present contained and perfect versions of ourselves\, while suggesting how forms of mysticism\, such as tarot reading\, can illuminate new pathways through turbulent times.

SUMMARY:Qualeasha Wood:code_eden
DESCRIPTION:Qualisha Wood\ncode_eden\nguest curated by Leandra-Juliet Kelley\nNovember 10\, 2025 – January 10\, 2026\nCurator lead talk with the artist with reception to follow Saturday\, November 15\, 3:00 – 6:00 PM \nRSVP\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/qualeasha-wood-code-eden-tickets-1820346688949?aff=oddtdtcreator \nIn her textile practice\, Wood brings together traditional craft techniques and contemporary technology. Her own image acts as a point of departure for works that explore racial\, sexual and gender identity as they relate to the Black femme body. Woods’ tapestries combine cybernetic and analog processes; in her work\, a pixel is equivalent to a stitch\, each stitch an analogy for the past\, present and future of Black femmehood\, both on- and off-line\, pre- and post-internet. \nWhile Wood’s tapestries blend images from social media with religious\, specifically Catholic\, iconography\, her ‘tuftings’ represent cartoon-like figures that recall the racist caricatures widespread in popular family programmes of the early-mid-20th century and beyond. As well as marking a technical shift from the artist’s tapestry pieces\, the tuftings have a distinctly different visual style. In them\, Wood adopts a naïve aesthetic that calls on the nostalgia of cartoon animations and their association with racial stereotyping to unpack notions of Black girlhood. Despite their formal simplicity\, the tuftings reveal a lurking tension drawn from the artist’s own experiences of consuming media rife with anti-Black prejudice throughout her life. Where the tapestries are absorbed in consumption and cyber culture\, the tuftings speak to inherited trauma and necessarily implicate accountability in the viewer.

SUMMARY:OPENING RECEPTION: Qualeasha Wood
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION: INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN PHILADELPHIA ARTIST MAKES REGIONAL SOLO DEBUT \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRowan University Art Gallery & Museum to Exhibit Qualeasha Wood’s Tapestries that Draw on Social Media\, Queer Culture\, and Anti-Black Prejudice \n\nWhen: Saturday\, November 15\n3 p.m. Artist and Curator talk\n4-6 p.m. Reception \nWhere: Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum\, 301 High Street West\, Glassboro\, NJ \nWhat: Opening Reception for Qualeasha Wood: code_eden\, the first solo show in the Philadelphia region by internationally celebrated\, Philadelphia-based textile artist. \nWood’s work explores her identity as a queer Black woman and a digital native\, as well as racial stereotyping\, social media\, and internet culture. “The artist’s tapestries\, which incorporate distorted self-portraits and screenshots from the internet\, feel both ephemeral and nostalgic\,” wrote The New York Times earlier this year. \nQualeasha Wood: code_eden invites viewers into the vivid\, layered worlds and self-portraits that she builds from digital culture. Through textiles\, tuftings\, and new video works (that consider glitches and misinformation online)\, the 29-year-old artist transforms the language of technology into lush landscapes. The exhibition presents her as a world-builder\, crafting a meta-paradise that blurs the line between the virtual and the human. \nVisuals to expect: \n\n\nArtist Qualeasha Wood leading a gallery walk-through\n\n\nTextiles\, tuftings\, and new video works\n\n\nReception gathering in Rowan’s contemporary art gallery \n\n\nLearn more.\nPRESS PHOTOS (credits/captions enclosed) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum\nRowan University Art Gallery & Museum offers contemporary art exhibitions featuring celebrated\, high-caliber visual artists from the global and local communities.
