This park is named for Revolutionary War Captain Joseph Buck (1753 - 1803). After the war, he served as commander of the Cumberland County Militia, and founded the town of Millville. A plaque by the river tells Captain Buck's story:

"Captain Joseph Buck, a veteran Revolutionary War officer and commander of the Cumberland County Militia, stood on these riverbanks in the early 1790's and reviewed his troops. As time went on he foresaw a new city of manor houses, lumber mills and industry amid the wilderness. In 1796, Captain Buck and partners Eli Elmer and Robert Smith  purchased 24,000 acres along the Maurice River, where Captain Buck founded Millville and designed its streets. Though he died before his dreams for the city became a reality, Captain Buck's rugged spirit and far-reaching vision gave Millville a resilient foundation that endures today." [1]
