A Stitch in Time

March 15 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT
Stitch in Time Event presented by HSH

The Historical Society of Haddonfield is kicking off America’s 250th with an event on Sunday, March 15, from 1-3 pm as we introduce our collection of antique needlework and share the stories of the young women who created them. The program will cover the art, history, and practice of needlework, including the materials, techniques, designs, and verses found in many 18th century embroideries.

Samplers and embroideries were an important part of girls’ education in 18th and 19th century America, teaching letters, numbers, designs, and inspirational verses while building both decorative and practical stitching skills. After mastering the basics, many girls completed a more elaborate embroidery as a final project. These pieces offer insight into the social, cultural, religious, and philosophical context of the time.

More than 22 samplers are on display in Greenfield Hall, along with additional examples of needlework, including embroidery and hair art. We have traced the history of many of the Haddonfield girls and young women who created these pieces, and many have compelling stories.

The Borough of Haddonfield will have sampler kits available for purchase. This event is free, but registration is required due to limited space. Registration Link
