Centennial Lecture Series: David MacMillan, Ph.D., Princeton U., Nobel Laureate
February 16 @ 10:30 am - 4:15 pm EST
FreeJoin the Rowan University community for a discussion with Nobel Laureate Dr. David MacMillan, who was honored in 2021 for his revolutionary work in synthetic organic chemistry, impacting scientific research and everyday society.
In his first lecture, “The Path to Invention and Discovery in Catalysis,” the Princeton University professor will discuss a new class of reactions in chemistry called asymmetric organocatalysis. Made from organic, carbon-based molecules, organocatalysts are biodegradable and benign, making them safer and cheaper to use than most traditional metal catalysts. They are used in the production of new drugs and materials.
His second lecture, “The Development of Asymmetric Organocatalysis and Metallaphotoredox,” will highlight why organocatalysis has become so important in modern synthetic chemistry. He will also discuss cutting-edge applications of visible light photocatalysis, harnessing light energy to do chemistry for the invention of new organic chemistry reactions.
Sponsored by Rowan University and the College of Science & Mathematics, this in-person-only event is free and open to the public.
Date: Friday, February 16
Seminar One: 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.
Seminar Two: 3:00 – 4:15 p.m.
