If you’ve never witnessed the Bob Riccio Memorial Tour de Pitman before, you’re missing one of the best events ever staged in Pitman. Even if you’re ordinarily not a racing fan, these races are exciting to watch, and it’s free! Each year this event gets more popular and with good reason. Dedicated to the memory of its namesake, Bob Riccio, a cyclist from the area who died of brain cancer in 2008, this event “gives us an opportunity to talk about all the good he did for biking” said Rich Ambacher. For Rich, the president of Caffeinated Cyclists Racing and one of the main organizers of the race, the event is a chance to pay homage to Riccio who he says played a large part in the evolution of cycling in southern New Jersey. “People in general who ride their bikes are growing in numbers,” Ambacher said . “He (Ricco) was probably responsible for getting half of South Jersey into cycling.”  Now in its 7th year, the race through town brings out cyclists from all over the region to compete in a number of heats around the 3-mile loop. There are three races this year. Amateurs to professionals to the 35-year-old and older crowd made up the 250 cyclists that were out on Broadway in town last year. The three groups all run heats individual of each other starting at one hour intervals. It kick starts at 8:00 AM with category 4/5 racers who will ride 8 laps (24 miles). Next, at 9:00 AM racers 35+ yrs old will ride 10 laps (30 miles) and finally, 10:00 AM begins the pro Category 1/2/3. They will ride 18 laps (50 miles).
