Israeli conductor, Noam Aviel will conduct Symphony in C in a program of French music. The concert opens with Franz Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1, S. 110/2 which depicts the “Dance in the Village Inn” from Lenau’s Faust and conjures demonic revelry and seduction. Composer and violinist Henri Vieuxtemps’ Violin Concerto No. 5 in A minor was written in 1861 as a “contest piece” for the Brussels Conservatory. Violinist Stella Chen is the soloist. Symphonie Fantastique Opus 14 by Hector Berlioz has been called “a musical expedition into psychedelia because of its hallucinatory and dream-like nature.” Berlioz wrote the symphony as a way to express his unrequited love for an Irish actress.
