Commissioners announce schedule of events for South Jersey 250 ahead of our nation’s 250th birthday

(Camden, NJ) – During this season of seminal events the Camden County Commissioners are preparing for the nation’s 250th Anniversary, the FIFA World Cup, and a variety of other events throughout the year. On Tuesday, the Board of Commissioners joined local leaders to announce the schedule of events for South Jersey 250, a coordinated regional initiative commemorating our nation’s 250th birthday.

“Our proximity to Philadelphia places our region at the heart of our nation’s origin story and while our neighbor on the other side of the Delaware is recognized as the cradle of liberty, New Jersey has possibly a more impactful history when it comes to the founding of this country and our battle for independence,” said Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. “South Jersey 250 will recognize the vast history of the region and give residents a one stop shop for everything happening within the county and beyond.”

The goal of the events planned as part of South Jersey 250 is to build on the foundation of South Jersey and Camden County as a destination for visitors and further enhance the quality of life that residents already enjoy.

Commissioner Jonathan Young highlighted the programming planned for the year, and the collaborative effort with municipalities, schools, and historical societies.

“Throughout the year, residents will have the opportunity to participate in educational programs, historical tours, community celebrations, and family friendly events that bring our shared history to life,” said Commissioner Jonathan Young. “We’re partnering with schools, historical organizations, our Camden County Library System, and local municipalities to make sure these activities are accessible to everyone. South Jersey 250 gives us the opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been, celebrate who we are, and look ahead to the future we’re building together.”

With the City of Philadelphia as the backdrop, Mayor Victor Carstarphen emphasized the city of Camden’s role in the birth of our nation.

“As we unveil South Jersey 250, the City of Camden, Camden County and all of our partners are ready to celebrate America’s 250th through the spring, summer, and beyond,” said Camden Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen. “As national observances are planned just across the Delaware River, it important that we also recognize the important role South Jersey played during the American Revolution not to mention Camden’s significant contributions over the past 250 years. We encourage local businesses, community stakeholders, South Jersey residents, and visitors from across the region to join us as we celebrate 250!”

Assemblyman Bill Moen underscored the role South Jersey played in the American Revolution and previewed the plethora of events that will be taking place in the region this year.

“South Jersey played a key role in the American Revolution and has made major contributions to United States history ever since,” said Assemblyman Bill Moen. “South Jersey 250 will pay homage to our incredible history and vibrant communities. National and international spotlights will shine on our region throughout the Semiquincentennial, FIFA World Cup, and Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Thanks to our local, non-profit, and business partnerships, South Jersey is ready to meet the moment.”

Marshall Spevak, CEO of the Battleship New Jersey, highlighted the unique experiences that the Battleship has to offer as part of South Jersey 250.

“The Battleship New Jersey is proud to participate in South Jersey 250, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary through engaging, on-board experiences on the nation’s most decorated Battleship,” said Marshall Spevak, CEO of the Battleship New Jersey. “We look forward to welcoming visitors to the South Jersey waterfront from across the country and around the world to discover the history, scale, and stories that make both our ship and South Jersey a must-visit destination.”
